Streetscape in a New World International Competition of Urban Streetscape Design Award Ceremony and New Book Launching
New World China Land Limited ("NWCL" or "the Group", Hong Kong stock code: 917) had co-hosted with di Magazine to hold the Award Ceremony for "Streetscape in a New World - International Competition of Urban Streetscape Design" on 12 September, 2008 in Shanghai. A selection of over 50 competition entries has been published in a book with the same name and was formally launched at the event.
The publication is available for sale in major book stores in more than 20 key cities in mainland China as well as in Hong Kong and Taiwan. It is a collection of some brilliant thinking towards urban streetscape design. The designers, through their original pieces of work, reflect what they feel about the relationship between street life and vibrancy of the city.
Mr Adrian Cheng Chi-kong, Executive Director of NWCL said, "As a national property developer, we are the builder of the city. At the same time, we are also the active participant in city life itself. We redevelop the fading old city into brand new living and working places, facing squarely at the reality of the ever-changing city landscape. We understand more than anyone about the transformation of the city, which is why we have to shoulder more responsibility. The book Streetscape in a New World is not only the display of the result of the so-named International Design Competition, but also the extracts of the collective introspection on this topic by NWCL and the general public. No matter in what form the public and ourselves participate in this process, we strongly believe Streetscape in a New World is not an end, but a new beginning."
As part of the celebration of the eighth listing anniversary of NWCL, "Streetscape in a New World - International Competition of Urban Streetscape Design" has undergone for five months and the final jury was held in March this year. Members of Jury included Professor Zheng Shiling, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Jury (Final); Mr Zhu Wenyi, Dean of the Architecture College and PhD Supervisor of Tsinghua University; Professor Wang Weiqiang, PhD Supervisor in College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University; Mr Alex Krieger, Professor of Urban Design Harvard University; Mr Jean Paul Viguier, Archietect DPLG; and Mr David Chen, Director of Design and Planning for NWCL Beijing. The First Prize of the competition goes to "The Urban Forest", designed by a group lead by Mr James Wines, Professor of College of Architecture, University of Pennsylvania. The design is highly commended by the Jury for its sustainability elements apart from the overall green theme. The incorporation of rainwater storage system and the photovoltaic solar panels are some of the key features of this sustainability thinking. Its interesting streetscape design is also the key to winning the Competition.
