The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre voted a top landmark in China
The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) together with the adjacent Golden Bauhinia Square has just been voted as one of the 60 top landmarks in China, placing it in the ranking with other world renowned Chinese icons such as the Tiananmen Square and the National Stadium (the Bird's Nest).
The voting by mainland Chinese citizens was jointly organised by 32 major media organisations in China. The public was given a chance to select 60 landmarks of significance between 1949 and 2009 from 300 nominees.
Mr Cliff Wallace, Managing Director of the HKCEC, is pleased with the choice commenting that, "It is gratifying that one of Hong Kong's most iconic and enjoyable public places for tourists has been recognised and is so appreciated in the feelings of so many Chinese people from the mainland. Architecturally, the HKCEC including the Golden Bauhinia Sculpture is a statement of confidence in the prominence of Hong Kong following Hong Kong's return of sovereignty to the PRC. This is reflected also by the voting and this meaningful acknowledgement."
The Golden Bauhinia Square is used regularly by local citizens as well as thousands of tourists from the mainland daily. Formal flag-raising ceremonies are held in the Square on each anniversary of the Handover on 30 June 1997 as well as for Chinese National Day on 1 October each year.
