The HKCEC in art: young students show their skills

16 artistic visions of a Hong Kong landmark

On 19 May 2012, 16 young primary and secondary school students received prizes at an Award Presentation Ceremony for their submissions in "A Landmark for Success Drawing Competition 2012" ("Drawing Competition"). This was the first ever Drawing Competition to be organised by Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Management) Limited ("HML").

Located in Wan Chai, one of Hong Kong's major central business districts, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre ("HKCEC") has become a landmark of Hong Kong and brings millions of overseas visitors to the area every year. The purpose of the Drawing Competition was to give school students in Wan Chai the chance to visit the HKCEC and, by looking at its architecture and interior design from an artistic perspective, learn more about how it contributes to Hong Kong's economy.

The standard of the drawings was extremely high, making judging a challenging task.

Some participants produced drawings that turned the HKCEC into a ship or even gave it a pair of wings, communicating ideas about how the HKCEC promotes cultural exchange and trade between people from around the world. Some presented ideas on ways of further expanding the HKCEC in an environmentally friendly context, for instance by using translucent glass for the roof and depicting pink dolphins swimming in the adjacent harbour.

Mr Cliff Wallace, Managing Director of HML, being one of the judges of the Drawingm Competition, said, "The rich imagination, creativity and drawing skills of the students amazed me and the other judges too. Every student was given the same presentation and was shown just a few photos of the HKCEC, and then invited to share with us how they saw the HKCEC from their own unique perspective. The outcome was a superb array of creative sketches and views, testifying to the artistic talent of the young people of Wan Chai".

A total of 126 Primary 5 and 6 and Form 1 to 3 students from five primary schools and six secondary schools in Wan Chai participated in the Drawing Competition, which took place on 3 March 2012. On the day of the Competition, the students were shown facilities not normally open to the public at the HKCEC, such as reporter rooms and the VIP Lounge inside the Grand Hall, the venue for the 1997 Handover ceremony. They were also presented with some lesser-known information about the HKCEC. Following the site tour, the students were given 90 minutes to draw the HKCEC in any way they liked. Some were inspired by what they saw and heard during the site tour, while others sketched their own versions of what they thought the HKCEC should look like.

A total of 16 winning entries were selected for 18 awards. From now until the end of August 2012, the winning entries will be displayed in the HKCEC. Millions of local and overseas visitors attending events at the HKCEC will have the chance to appreciate these art works by our talented young artists.
