New World Development ("NWD" or "The Group"; Hong Kong stock code: 17) is committed to nurturing young talents and recently launched the New World Navigator Business Mentorship Programme ("the Programme") with the University of Hong Kong ("HKU") and the Chinese University of Hong Kong ("CUHK"). Senior executives of the Group have been invited to offer individual coaching to elite students from these two institutions. The Programme aims at enhancing their knowledge about business operations and enabling them to become the business leaders of tomorrow. The Programme made its debut with a CEO talk delivered by Tsang Yam-Pui, Executive Director of the NWS Holdings Limited, who spoke on the topic of 'Acting and Looking like a Leader' and shared his many insights into the characteristics of good leadership.
Senior Executives as the mentors
The Group has selected 30 mentees who are all first or second year undergraduates in the Business Faculties of HKU and CUHK. Each mentee has been paired up with a veteran NWD executive, who provides sage advice and appropriate guidance to the mentee and on the best course of becoming a future business leader.
Tsang Yam-Pui on leadership
The Programme began with a highly successful CEO Talk by Tsang Yam-Pui who shared his insights into the topic of 'Acting and Looking like a Leader'. He highlighted five essential elements of a successful leader: presentable appearance, ability to keep abreast of current affairs, critical thinking, sincerity and balanced outlook.
Mr Tsang said, "As a leader, you have to understand the pendulum effect any matter brings about. A slight swing of the pendulum is able to provoke strong sideway forces. Every single step you make will result in strong ramifications and imponderable knock-on effects. Top management has to give thorough consideration to all matters before they reach a decision." Mr. Tsang also shared his insights into possible career paths with the attendees.
The Programme runs for one year, with the mentors giving one-on-one guidance to the mentees throughout the course. Besides the CEO Talk, the Programme includes 'job shadowing' which allows the mentees to attend business meetings with their mentors in order to acquire more in-depth knowledge of business operations. The mentees will also make company visits in Hong Kong and Mainland China including a company Golf day with their mentors.
