New World Group organises Dongjiang River Field Trip

New World Development Company Limited ("The Group"; Stock Code: 17.HK) recently made a field trip to the Dongjiang river source in Guangdong Province.

Gary Chen, Executive Director and Joint General Manager of New World Development Company Limited together with Prof K C Ho, Dean of the School of Science and Technology of the Open University of Hong Kong and officials from Water Resources Department of Guangdong Province and the Heyuan Municipal People's Government led the delegation, comprising the Group's management staff from its various business units and subsidiary companies. The delegation also visited the water supply and management infrastructure developments to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of water conservation.

Gary Chen opined that the trip has a very special meaning and said: "I am glad to have had the opportunity to visit the major water management infrastructure development projects. A balance has to be maintained between the needs of the environment and society on the one hand and achieving economic growth on the other. The water from Dongiang River is a source of stable water supply to Hong Kong which in turn benefits local economic development. Hong Kong people have a special feelings towards the Dongjiang River. This field trip has enriched the delegation's knowledge of our water resources."

During the two-day trip, the delegation visited Xinfengjiang Reservoir (aka Wanlu Lake) located in City of Heyuan, and looked at its water storage and water supply capabilities, protection measures and the development opportunities in the reservoir area, followed by a visit to a wastewater treatment plant on the southern side of the city.

On the second day, the delegation was impressed by the historical background of the Dongjiang water supplies project and the contributions by various parties on the protection of water resources after the visit to the Jinhu Pumping Station and Dongshen Water Supply Improvement Works Exhibition Centre in Dongguan. The trip ended at the Bio-nitrification Plant and the Shenzhen Reservoir. The delegation benefitted tremendously from the detailed explanations of Prof K C Ho and the government officials during the whole journey, which will help them promote water conservation in the day-to-day operations and in training the staff of their companies.

Placing great emphasis on corporate sustainability, New World Group has established the Group Sustainability Steering Committee chaired by Executive Director and Joint General Manager Adrian Cheng. The Committee issued its first "Sustainability Policy" earlier this year. The Committee is responsible for setting the objectives and targets for long-term sustainable growth for the company, our employees, other stakeholders and the community in general. The Group has adopted "water conservation" as the main sustainability theme of the year and will promote both internally and externally the message of treasuring our water resources.

Subsidiary companies participating in this field trip included K11 Concepts Limited, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Management) Limited, New World First Bus Services Limited, Citybus Limited, Hip Hing Construction Company Limited, New World TMT Limited, Macao Water Supply Company Limited as well as Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Company Limited.
