"We are pleased to take part in Earth Hour 2010," said Mr Adrian Cheng, Executive Director of New World Group. "As an environmentally conscious company and a leader in corporate social responsibility, we fully recognize the urgency of the challenges arisen from the global climate change, and are strongly committed to raising public awareness on tackling the change and urging the public to reduce carbon emissions.”
The Group believes that collaborative efforts are essential to inspire positive change for the environment. Residents and tenants of the properties managed by the Group and guests in some of the hotels under the Group are encouraged to show their support by turning off the lights in their premises or guestrooms respectively. Apart from spreading the message of turning off the lights for one hour, New World Group has encouraged its staff members and their families to live a low carbon life by eating less meat, using less disposable dining utensils and reducing shower time.
Mr Cheng added, "In order to promote environmental protection, in addition to our support to Earth Hour, we have established a Group Environmental Committee responsible for formulating green objectives, driving to materialize our Group Environmental Policy and promoting environmental protection both internally and externally. Our various business arms have initiated various programmes in promoting green office, green operation and green community, and are pursuing ways for continuous improvement. The environment has played a key role in our corporate social responsibility planning, and we will pay more efforts in the area."
Earth Hour is an initiative on climate change initiated by WWF in Sydney in 2007, and has developed into a global climate awareness campaign in the past two years. In 2009, around one billion people from more than 4,000 cities in 88 countries, including Hong Kong, Macau and cities in China, participated in this call for global action on climate change.
