Dec NWD signs an agreement with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council to develop and manage the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre ("HKCEC") at the Wanchai waterfront.

Dec Phase One of the New World Centre is completed while the New World Hotel begins operation inside the New World Centre.

Jan New World Development acquires and sets up its head office at the then American International Tower at 18 Queen's Road Central. American International Tower was renamed as New World Tower on 1 January 1980.

May New World Development Company Limited is established to venture into property development. Dr Ho Sin Hang is elected Chairman of the Company, while Dr Cheng Yu Tung is appointed Director and General Manager. Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Limited is the Company's largest shareholder.
